Information for travellers from China

All travellers who develop respiratory symptoms, however mild, within 14 days of returning from mainland China, should stay at home in isolation and call NHS 111. Travellers from Wuhan and Hubei province should self-isolate for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, due to the increased risk from that area.

There is self help information via our online consultation service (e-consult) which may be of assistance if you need help when we are closed, i.e. after 18:30 and over the weekend


From January 2020 REPEAT PRESCRIPTION REQUESTS will take up to 72 hours to process

Your safety is paramount and rushing requests through the system in 48 hours is challenging and could lead to errors.

We have taken the decision to allow up to 72 hours in line with good practice.

This refers only to medication which is already list on your repeat list. Specific queries and requests for previously issued acute medication may still take up to 7 working days.

If you need medical attention but it is not life threatening, there are a number of  local NHS services to choose from. Selecting the right one will help you get the treatment you need faster.

  • Need medical attention but it's not life threatening? Not sure where to go? Call NHS 111.

  • GP appointments are available across Southampton 8am to 9pm, every day of the week at one of 6 hubs across the city near to where you live. Book these appointments through your GP practice or by phoning 111.

  • Need confidential advice or help with medication? Talk to your pharmacist.


    Camera Controlled Car Park Management SystemParkingEyeLogo

    We would like to inform you that we are installing a new car park management system over the next few weeks.

    The system is managed by ParkingEye who have a number of installations at Lidl/ Aldi and various cinemas locally.

    The first 15 minutes are free, to enable people to pop in and collect prescriptions etc… For additional time up to 2 hour maximum please enter your full correct vehicle registration details into the terminals in reception.

    Improving access to GP services - evening and weekend appointments

    You can now see a GP or other healthcare professional during:Extended Access

    • weekday evenings between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
    • Saturdays and Sundays 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. including bank holidays.

    To book an appointment, talk to the receptionist at the surgery. You may be able to get an appointment on the same day if required.

    You may be offered an appointment at:

    • St Mary's Surgery
    • another local GP practice
    • another local NHS service - such as a General Practice Hub  

    Urgent and routine appointments with a GP or Nurse Practitioner either same day or in advance are avaialable .

    These appointments are not suitable for all types of problems (NB this is not a walk in service).

    Appointments are avaialable at St Mary's Surgery (SO14), Woolston Lodge Surgery (SO19), Portswood Solent GP surgery (SO17), Shirley Health Partnership (SO15), Lordshill Health Centre (SO16), Chessel Branch Surgery (SO19) and the Royal South Hants Hospital (SO14).

    CQC Ratings

    The practice was last inspected by the Care Quality Commission in September 2016.

    Overall the practice is rated as good.

    Specifically the practice was rated as good for providing caring, effective and well-led services.

    CQC found the practice to be outstanding for providing a responsive service.

    St Mary's Surgery wins national award for cervical screening campaign

    Jos trust Award

    St Mary’s Surgery has won a national award for their work to increase the number of women attending potentially life-saving cervical screening (smear tests).  

    The IN THE PINK! Campaign has been awarded the top prize by charity Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust in their annual Cervical Screening Awards which recognise excellence and innovation across the UK.

    Cervical screening can prevent up to 75% of cervical cancers from developing however 1 in 4 women do not attend the test when invited, significantly increasing their risk of developing a disease which claims two lives every day. Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, the only UK charity dedicated to women affected by cervical cancer, created the awards in 2010 to acknowledge organisations working to reverse this trend and inspire others.The judges highlighted the following "(the campaign) demonstrated understanding and investigation of the problem", delivered “excellent outcomes and plans going ahead” and commented that it is "great to see a full team effort and taking action by increasing service provision in light of feedback from patients".

    Robert Music, Chief Executive of Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, said: "St Mary’s is a very worthy winner of our Cervical Screening Awards. Their application positively stood out among the applications we received and provides an excellent example of a targeted campaign to overcome some of the barriers to screening faced in their community. Cervical screening uptake is worryingly at a 19 year low in England and local initiatives are vital to reversing this trend. If we don’t then we are only going to see more women diagnosed and potentially losing their lives, from what is a largely preventable disease. I would like to personally congratulate St Mary’s and hope that their work encourages others to invest in prevention campaigns."

    Dr Sue Robinson, Clinical Chair for Southampton Clinical Commissioning Group praised the surgery for their award; "we are delighted and extremely proud to have a GP Surgery within our city recognised with this award. The whole team worked hard to achieve this and are a shining example that campaigns such as this one, do work and can make a real difference to the health of people of Southampton."

    This database is run by Southampton City Council, and has a wealth of information about local services and self-assessment tools about eligibility for council run services that anyone with access to a computer can complete. It is designed to be easily used by the public as well as professionals, and you can search for keywords such as “lonely” or “mental health”.

     As well as who to contact and what support is available, there is also easy to read information about the kinds of things we are often asked about. For example, what to do if your teenager is moody – what are the warning signs, what to say to them, when and who should you contact (and it’s not just “contact your GP”!)



    Dementia Awareness

    Dementia can happen to anyone and there's currently no cure. It can strip you of your memory, your relationships and your connection to the world you love, leaving you feeling isolated and alone.    The Alzheimer's Society believe that life doesn't end when dementia begins, and we do everything we can to help people living with dementia hold onto their lives and the things they love for longer.  We also believe it's possible to do new things and have new experiences, too.

    The ICE bus provides welfare support in the City Centre at the weekend

    The 'In Case of Emergency', abbreviated as ICE, night time emergency bus is a safe haven for those who are injured, unwell or in need of welfare support when out in Southampton city centre on a Saturday night.

    The bus is parked opposite the Cenotaph on Above Bar Street, at the entrance to East Park.

    The bus is available on a Saturday night between 10pm – 4am, and during student Fresher’s and New Years Eve.
